Experimenting with Photos

Celtic Moonspice 16 Oz Candle $14

I'm at it again, playing with my photos, in search of the elusive 'perfect' picture setup....if such a thing exists. Photo taking has always been the bane of my existence. However, I vow to master it some day! This time I tried a black background. I have long given up on white backgrounds....I can never get them white, they're always blue or grey, and I don't have the expertise to use something much fancier for photo editing than the picture editor that comes with my computer. So here it is, what do you think? I was concerned the black may be too much, but I think it goes with my look, don't you?

By the way, this is my new Celtic Moonspice scent. I've added a bunch of new items this weekend, so stop by my shop and check them out!

No Rest for the Wickeds ~ A Perfect Pink Sugar Type Collaboration

Pink Sugar Type Gift Basket Collaboration $40

I rarely 'connect' well with women, I don't have many girl friends, I'm kind of a freak. However, when I met Misty of WickedSoaps online, we clicked. Maybe it's because we're almost the same person in two different bodies? (I think that means she's a freak too!) We enjoy (and dislike!) a lot of the same things, and we want to take over the world with Pink Sugar!!! (Ok, ok, we want to take over the world anyway, but if it's with Pink Sugar Type, all the better!) I have even had the pleasure of meeting this awesome chick in person! We hung out one weekend long ago...(and we need to do it again!)

Anyway, we decided that we needed to do a collaboration, hence the Pink Sugar gift basket was born (it's our favorite scent!). Not your thing? Have no fear, we plan on doing some more in other scents. Have something you'd like to see? Shoot us a convo.

Not only would this gift basket make a great present for someone, but heck, why not pamper yourself? Mother's Day, birthday, Christmas, graduation...the gift giving occasions are endless!

Here's a list of everything it includes:

1 - 8 oz soy wax jar candle from AuntieDis
3 - 1 oz soy wax tart melts from TheTemptingTart
1 - 8 oz emulsifying sugar body polish from WickedSoaps
1 - 3 oz body butter creme from WickedSoaps
1 - 4 oz goat's milk soap from WickedSoaps

New Product ~ Soy Wax Melts

Now I know what you're thinking, you're thinking, "Di, you're on crack, you've had soy wax melts in your shop for a while!" And you'd be right! However, in the past I've done the breakaway melts, that come in the plastic clam shell container. I think I'm totally going to be switching over to these new melts, which are not only TWICE the size, but your cost is not paying for the packaging, it's paying for more lusciously scented wax! You will get a total of SIX ounces of wax with these new lovelies, instead of the 3-3.5 ounces of wax that you'd get with the former breakaway melts. Not only that, I'm going to be rolling these out like hard core! I have TONS of fragrances that I can't wait to unveil!

Limited Editions

Just like any person who hand makes their items, I have tons of supplies. Things that either seemed like a good idea at the time, didn't quite work out like I had planned, or were custom orders for someone that I went a little overboard on ordering. I've been wondering what to do with these forever. I hate waste. I don't want to throw them away, and I don't want to destash them! Finally it hit me! I should totally offer these items to others, so they could enjoy them too. Thus, the "LIMITED EDITION" section of my shop was born.

What exactly does Limited Edition mean? It means I will only be carrying these items for a limited time (You know, while supplies last!). Once they're gone they're gone for good. See something you like? Snag it up, because it may not be there next week, or even tomorrow!

Lotion or Massage Candles, Fact or Fiction?

Many of you will remember the previous posts I did on How to Properly Burn a Candle and The Triple Scented Candle Conspiracy. Both are good reading if you're a candle fanatic!

Today I'd like to talk with you about "Lotion Candles" or "Massage Candles". Have you used them? Do you have an opinion? Please feel free to share it!! I'd love to hear it! To be quite honest, as a candle maker, I have no idea whether or not they 'work', I have never tried one personally, however I do know that I would never promote my own candles as lotion candles.

Personally, 'lotion candle' is a phrase that makes me cringe, every time I hear someone promoting their product as this.. I cannot stress this enough, PLEASE do your homework if you are buying 'lotion' or 'massage' candles. I've seen many products labeled as lotion candles that are using scents that I know are not skin safe.

It's very important to use skin safe scents in any bath or body products. Another thing for sure I would steer clear of is any 'lotion candle' that is colored. If you MUST use a lotion candle, please be sure to use one that is uncolored. The colorants used in candle making are NOT skin safe.

Any candle labeled as a 'lotion' or 'massage' candle should be labeled as if it were a bath or body product. It should include all the ingredients included in the candle.

As always, don't be afraid as a consumer to ask questions of the person you're buying from. They should be knowledgeable in all areas of their product.

~Vanilla Hazelnut Coffee~ January Scent of the Month

I know this post is a little late, perhaps I 'rang in the New Year' just a little too exuberantly last night. Now it's time to hunker down and wait out the cold of January and February, and hope that March brings with it a little bit of warmth and some extra strong sunshine!

In order to stay warm and toasty, I have chosen Vanilla Hazelnut Coffee for the January scent of the month. You can get it in the 8 ounce size or the 16 ounce size for 20% off in my Etsy shop!

Every year I ask myself the same thing.....What do I get for my kid's teachers? Without further further ado, I have put together a few fabulous suggestions from my fellow Etsyians.....

All teachers need one of these fabulous key fobs from tumpuscreations. I mean, all teachers are always losing their keys right? With one of these wristlet key fobs, that won't be an issue any longer. With tons of snazzy prints, and an affordable price, they'd make great gifts for all the teachers on your list!

Be sure to check out these fabulous book board pendants by prettytheory for your favorite English teacher. Once again, she has a wide variety of choices, so you're sure to find something for each teacher on your list. I love this French Pear pendant!

These personalized teacher note cards by staccato are just the thing for that hard to buy for teacher! All teachers write notes, correct? Wouldn't you like to get one of these cute little note cards to tell you that little Johnny has been slacking off again?

This wonderful 12 ounce coffee mug by KarinLorenc is sure to bring a smile to any math teacher's face. Math was never my strong subject, but I sure do love the shape of this mug. I mean, all teachers drink coffee (or tea) right?

How about a juicy MacIntosh Apple soy candle by yours truly? Candles are the perfect gift for anyone who is hard to buy for. Theywhen go great when paired with note cards or a key fob. Just a little something extra to say "thanks".

How To Properly Burn A Candle

Some of you may remember my blog post debunking the Triple Scented candle conspiracy. If not, you can read about it HERE. (Knowledge is power!) Today I'm going to give you some tips about the difference between the right and wrong way to burn a candle.

Let me preface this post with the statement that for some candles there is just no hope (there's a reason they sell those candles for $1 at the dollar store or $3 at Walmart). They're made with inferior ingredients, and not properly tested. There's probably not a snowball's chance that the wick used is going to burn one of those candles to the edges. I digress. For a properly made, quality candle, it should burn like the picture shown to the left. The jar is clean, the melt pool is full (meaning it's melted all the way across the top of the jar, with no wasted wax), and this is after letting it burn all day. (I know, I know, you're not supposed to do that, but *cough* don't do what I do, do what I say...) When you're purchasing candles, PLEASE ask the seller questions. If it sounds like they have no idea about wicking or they don't seem particularly knowledgeable and able to answer your questions easily, save your money and move on to the next candle maker. There are hundreds of awesome and responsible candle makers out there, but there are also hundreds that stick any old wick in a jar, pour in some wax and scent, and set up a booth, hoping to make a quick buck. Candle making requires a lot of testing, and there are many that aren't willing to do this, because it costs money. There is such a thing as a wick that's too small, but also it can bee too BIG, which is a fire hazard in itself. Ok ok, I'm getting off my soap box and on with the post....

That is one of my own hand poured candles. I lit it at about 11 AM, and this picture was taken at 8 PM. It was not a brand new candle to begin with, but it was willing and able to help me illustrate my post. Some important things to remember when burning candles:

Be sure to burn the candle at least 1 hour for every inch of diameter to achieve a full melt pool. This candle is 3 1/2" diameter at the widest point. That means, for it to achieve a full melt pool, it should take about 3 hours, maybe a little more. If you're going to leave the house 30 minutes after lighting a candle, it's probably a good idea to hold off until you return. If you only burn a candle for short time, you're creating a 'memory'. The candle will only easily burn to where it's burned before, so you're helping your candle to never achieve full melt pool, and burn creating a tunnel right down the center. Generally, only the first time you burn a candle is it this slow. Subsequent burns are normally quicker to achieve full melt pool.

Be sure to trim your wicks!! After the first lighting of your favorite candle, and before subsequent burning sessions, trim your wick to 1/4". Some candles get a big knobby wick at the top (called a mushroom) that should be trimmed off and thrown away before lighting again. You can do this with scissors, or a fingernail clipper works great also. If your candle is smoking, or the flame is 1" or more high, your wick definitely needs to be trimmed! Please don't leave these wick trimmings or *Gasp* matches in the melt pool of the candle!

You can prime your wick by extinguishing the candle with a wick dipper. A wick dipper is a metal hook that you use to push the wick over into the melt pool and then pull it back up. This eliminates the smoke from extinguishing the candle, and also primes the wick with wax so it's ready to be lit the next time. This is not necessary, but it is pleasant to extinguish a candle with no smoke (and besides, who doesn't like to play with melted wax?).

Never burn your candle in a drafty area. Do not light your candle near drapes or flammable items. Be sure to take all packaging off the jar before lighting the candle (ribbons, tags, etc).

Never leave a burning candle unattended, or near children or pets!

Do not handle a burning candle, as the container will be very hot and could possibly burn you.

Place your candle on a level and heat resistant surface (ask me how I know this...you should see the top of my dresser!) The stove is normally a great place. I also have purchased some cork coasters that you can find in the garden section of stores, I got mine at Big Lots by the potting aisle. These reduce the heat from the bottom of your candle and don't let it transfer to whatever it's sitting upon.

When storing your candles, store them in a cool, dark (and of course dry) place. A linen closet (not in the bathroom) is a great place.

If at any time you have any questions about candles, please feel free to Email me, and I'd be glad to help. I don't claim to know everything, but what i don't know I will research for you!

Happy candle burning!

Ahhhh ....August

The end of summer is fast approaching...sad, but also a relief, because the end of summer means.....BACK TO SCHOOL!!! YAY!!! I don't know about you, but my kids go back to school at the end of August, which means that we'll spend the month doing meeting teachers, school shopping, clothes, supplies etc, and we have a birthday! Austin will be 9 this month. And I can finally go a block of 8 hours, while I'm NOT asleep, and not hear fighting, arguing, bickering, taunting, teasing, cajoling, crying, maniacal laughter, or any of the above in any combination!

To celebrate the pending back to school events, I have selected MacIntosh Apple as my August candle scent of the month. It's 20% off in my Auntie Di's shop.

Hope you have a great month planned to send the summer out in style!

Scent of the Month

So after much contemplation, I've decided to implement a "Scent of the Month" starting in July. Each month, a different scent will be 20% off for the whole month. I was going to plan out a whole calendar with a scent for each month, but then I thought "Well, if it's a surprise every month, people will have to come back on the 1st to see what the new scent is!" So here I go....

Come back on July 1st and see what the scent of the month is!!!

The Triple Scented Candle Conspiracy

Just call me Little Miss Mythbuster today.....

I want to tell you about something that's been bugging me for quite a while now. Those of you who are candle lovers will know what I'm talking about.....it's the "triple scented candle" conspiracy. You buy a candle online or at a craft show that is advertised to be 'triple scented' and the maker states "We add 3 times as much fragrance as everyone else".... and you get it home and fire her up.....to find out the scent really isn't strong. Why? It's a triple scented candle right?

WRONG!!!

Triple scented candles are a MYTH!!

But how can this be? I'll tell you!!

Companies that advertise their candles as being triple scented (or even double scented) and say "they add three times as much fragrance than anyone else" are using this as a marketing gimmick, for the simple fact that wax (ANY kind of wax) is like a sponge.

You know that kitchen sponge you have in your kitchen? Think of your wax candle just like this sponge. Now go in your kitchen and get a shallow pan and your sponge (a standard 3 x 4 kitchen sponge). Squeeze it out really good so it's almost dry. Put it in the pan. There's your sponge (let's say we'll make your sponge be a pound of wax) without any water (fragrance) in it. Now get a cup of water and pour it on the sponge. It may take the all of the cup of water. Get another cup of water and pour it on the sponge. It starts to seep back out right? No matter what you do, you can't get that sponge to hold any more water than 1 cup (or less in some cases). The same goes with wax and fragrance oil. Candle companies simply can NOT add more fragrance than the wax will hold! It's physically impossible.

Lets say that as small time candle makers, we were privy to the candle making formulas of the big guys, like Yankee, Gold Canyon, etc. If we KNEW the formulas, and how much fragrance they added to their wax, and we actually DID add 3 times as much, we COULD use this as a marketing technique (providing it didn't start leaking back out), but I highly doubt that the big boys will share this information with anyone. So you see, triple scenting is simply a myth.

Has anyone ever gotten a candle that has little puddles of liquid on the top? That's the fragrance oil leaking back out! If it's been really hot and the candle has been sitting on your porch waiting for you to get home and unpack it, just give it a chance to set up in the coolness of your home. If it IS set up, and there is still a pool of liquid on the top, be VERY careful lighting it, as this poses a fire hazard!! Better to get a paper towel and wipe the candle (with it unlit of course) and get that excess oil off, then to risk starting a fire. This candle has too much fragrance in it, way more than the wax will hold.

In my opinion, it's better to make a quality (and still highly scented) candle, and let them sell themselves by quality and your customer service, than to use false gimmicks to undercut your competition and get more sales. Hopefully this post has been educational to everyone.

If you have any questions regarding this post, please feel free to Email me, I don't claim to be an expert, but I'll do my best!!
